Article | Rick Ace Rhodes | Nice article MassReality! I've often wondered what it must of been like for a video store clerk back in the day. I'm sure like all clerk jobs it offered customers that were annoying, odd or actually interesting. It's a shame that technology has made things like this obsolete. It may have made our lives more convenient, but it removed some of the fun that once was involved in the inconvenience. My father loves to tell this story of how on Saturday's him and his friends would go out to the mall, drink and eat, and then spend the day in the record store digging through shelves and looking to see what cool records were in stock. Now and days that's all removed, you can just go to iTunes and find what you want. I've often wondered: why are new video releases released on Tuesdays? Even today new movies on DVD and Blu-Ray are often released on Tuesdays. Is it because Sunday's usually aren't business days and so Monday's have to be used to instead ship and receive them in stores to be put out on shelves? | Jan 02, 2017 | ![]() |
Article | Vaporman87 | Glad to see this one back on the site. It was a great look into the life behind the counter. It was sad to see the last of our local rental stores close up just recently. I don't know of any anywhere local now. | The Video Store Clerk | Jan 03, 2017 | ![]()
Article | Hoju Koolander | Still one of my favorites. No doubt as a teenager this would have been my dream first job, I don't know why I never went for it. Instead I will just have to live vicariously through your adventures. | The Video Store Clerk | Jan 04, 2017 | ![]()
Article | SockofFleagulls | Awesome trip back in time. I miss the days of taking a chance on a $2 previous viewed movie at Blockbuster. | The Video Store Clerk | Jan 04, 2017 | ![]()
Article | jkatz | Can anybody identify the second poster under the front desk? Through some internet sleuthing (read: squinting really really hard and IMDB) I was able to make out the on the left as being for Fifty/Fifty. Never heard of it. | The Video Store Clerk | Jan 04, 2017 | ![]()
Article | massreality | @jkatz The second poster is The Public Eye starring Joe Pesci. | The Video Store Clerk | Jan 05, 2017 | ![]()

Article | Vaporman87 | This story of your father helping others during Christmastime reminds me of the stories I've heard of my Grandfather and how he helped others without ever saying anything about it. That's what the Christmas Spirit is really all about. The giving. Especially to those who are struggling and just hoping to make it through another Christmas with food on the table. Thanks for sharing these memories Mickey. They will do us all a lot of good this Christmas. | 1986: The Year That Santa Became Real | Dec 15, 2016 | ![]()
Article | mickyarber | Yeah, it really should be all about the giving, and I have what I feel is a pretty deep appreciation for that aspect of the season now. The bottom line of this article must have gotten cut off. Where it says "Stay tuned for an article going into more detail"....it should read "Stay tuned for an article going into more detail about all of those presents of 1986." Weird. | 1986: The Year That Santa Became Real | Dec 15, 2016 | ![]()
Article | vkimo | Sweet article Mickey, got me right in the feels! Your dad seems like the genuine article. The fact that he did so much for others speaks to the real spirit of Christmas. Sadly the holidays bring a lot of pain and emphasis on the less fortunate, but that's the chance to help out. I enjoyed the formatting and font change, made for a nice comfy read. Those toy sets look so awesome. I wasn't even there for most of the 80s toys and feel they had the most appeal. It was like the marketing dept back then was on a whole other level. Looking forward to the next piece! | 1986: The Year That Santa Became Real | Dec 15, 2016 | ![]()
