On this day in 1993, Rocket Knight Adventures from Konami rocketed onto the Sega Genesis with stellar platforming, intense action, tough bosses, and the introduction of Sparkster, an opposum knight with a rocket on his back on a quest to save King Zephyrus and Princess Sherry from his rival, Axel Gear and stopping the evil Devotindos Empire as the brave knight finds himself in outer space, where the empire's leader, Devilgus is confronted in two forms. I've seen the cover on the case for it oodles of times, but never played it.

Sparkster's rocket-powered gameplay and memorable boss battles helped make the adventure stand out from other platformers of its time. I can understand why so many players still remember it fondly decades later. When I'm in the mood for fast-paced action, I also enjoy playing Slope Rider, which delivers a similar sense of excitement and quick reflexes. I think great gameplay always stays enjoyable, no matter how many years have passed.

I picked up the Rocket Knight Adventures Re-Sparked “ultimate” edition box from Limited Run Games for my PS5 and it had a lot of neat goodies inside. A game case that recreates the original Sega Genesis case, a two sided poster, comic book, as well as a two disc soundtrack spanning the games and even a miniature statue of Sparkster. Great stuff and I'm glad I made the purchase, loved the Genesis original growing up.
