This is one of those things I just can't let go of.

When we were all on RetroJunk I told the story of my family traveling home from a late night movie in our new car, a 1960 Ford Fairlane. We were passed in downtown traffic by a 1960 Ford Starliner. I yelled, and pointed, to the extra pair of taillights mounted in the rear bumper, but no one else in the car seemed impressed, especially my dad!

Years later, I read in Automobile Quarterly, an interview with some of Ford's stylists from the old Design Center recalling that the 1960 Ford was suppose to have taillights above the rear bumper, matched by a pair of lower taillights mounted in the rear bumper.

While that plan was rejected by management, two embossed "dimples" were stamped into the bumper, suggesting an extra pair of lights. According to Automobile Quarterly, "no 1960 Fords were ever manufactured with four rear taillights".

And that's why I'm fascinated by this old advertisement. Take a look at the 1960 Ford Starliner - maybe it's just the lighting!
