This might be a touchy subject...but why do you think Hollywood makes it so hard and difficult to give us a truly great and pure and unadulterated Superman movie? And I don't buy the naysayer narrative that "Superman is an outdated character" or that "people don't want to see a good live-action Superman story these days."

The reason I ask this is because I just watched the new James Gunn Superman movie and while I liked it...I couldn't help feeling to myself that it felt more like a James Gunn movie than a Superman flick. I honestly didn't like all the unnecessary humor in it or how weak Superman was in it or how it felt much more like a team-up movie than a solo Superman flick.

It seems like since Superman Returns came out and even since the 90's after the Christopher Reeve series ended...Hollywood just does not want to and seems afraid to give us another truly game-changing Superman movie in the same vein as the original Sam Raimi Spider-Man movie or Christopher Nolan's Batman Begins or the original Iron Man movie from 2008 or another Superman movie as iconic as the first two Christopher Reeve movies were in the Late-70's/Early-80's.

And why is that? And again, sorry for trying to bring up a completely new comic book movie on a retro site that is supposed to be dedicated to old school stuff, but I thought this would make for an interesting topic.

Since 1938 Superman, including live-action and animated versions, has followed long standing storytelling traditions that go waay back historically.

On the surface, Superman is the story of an orphaned alien who fell to Earth, and adopted us.

Upon closer examination, these stories are actually not about Superman, but are about us, who we are as human beings. Are we worth saving? Are we even worth the trouble of? An alien finds value in planet Earth and it's inhabitants. But the question is different now, does Hollywood find value in the people of Earth?

Modern entertainment seems more about naming and shaming, picking winners and losers. Actors must be the acceptable size, shape, color, gender; talent not necessary. A checklist only works when there is no love for ordinary people anymore.

In this climate, Superman is a difficult story for Hollywood agenda projects.Dispite all the shortcoming, it's a miracle that James Gunn was able to complete his Superman movie at all.

What's really lost here is the complexity of narrative superhero fans grew up with from Superman: The Animated Series.
