As of January of 2028 Sony will stop production of game discs. Understandably, many PlayStation console owners as well as game developers and publishers have shared their distaste of this decision as Sony moves forward with a digital only future. Losing physical games also means losing the following conveniences: Reselling games, lending them to friends and family, and preserving physical copies when the day comes of a digital storefront closing. On top of this, with digital games going forward, second-hand markets and physical game collecting will be eliminated while Sony forces the prices of digital games that they dictate. PlayStation owners are hoping that this backlash will get through to them before the time comes, but so far it seems that they aren't willing to change their minds. How will you deal with Sony's digital only future?

We knew for years this was coming. To be honest, I don't really care anymore. Five years ago I would have been up in arms over this, but I am at the point in my life where I feel videos game are a dying industry that no longer appeals to me. Plus, does anyone really need new video games at this point?

There is forty plus years of old video games that have been released that I can continue exploring and finding things I have never played before. I don't need new releases anymore because there is already so much out there just waiting for me to experience for the first time.

Thankfully, Sony is not the only game in town. There's still time for gamers to vote with their money for physical media still on offer. RAR has a point, the gaming landscape is changing so fast that Sony may find itself kicked to the curb.

I suppose you're right, and the last company to support physical now is Nintendo, even they've been releasing certain games as “game keys” with just about every Switch 2 owner eating up that Pokopia game. That, and all the additional clutter that it would add to shelves. Well I've been overdue in buying classic game consoles, I just need the funds to buy them from the steep prices on eBay.

I don't know if anyone remembers those anti-piracy PSAs from the 2000s. The ones that were usually included on a lot of DVDs. Someone did a parody in that style.

This is just the beginning of a string of bad decisions I fear.

People on Twitter are already predicting a second video game crash, but it seems Sony is trying to pull in the anti-digital gamers by discounting PS Plus subscription prices.

I don't know about a second video game crash. The factors that allowed the first one to occur aren't really a thing anymore. The industry took their lessons from the first one and created a much more stable structure that can't necessarily be brought down in the same way that was done in the 80s.

We definitely however are witnessing a big transition point in the history of gaming. The industry is going to evolve into something different than anything we have seen previously. I just hope it ends up being something good.
