Top four disappointing moments of childhood

There came times in my early years when expectations weren't as I thought, either from some kind of event, or something I never really got. With so many to count throughout though I figure it's best just to recall only the highlights of them. These are just a few moments from my childhood that left me disappointed.

Nickelodeon Floam

Through the early to mid 90s era of the the Nickelodeon network, many different products based on the children's television station would begin appearing in retail, and Floam was certainly something that parents quickly became regretful of buying, as it was this stretchy substance and make forms out of that you could take out of a plastic bucket, however if it got on a carpet or any other kind of fabric it could end up ruining it, and that's when I wouldn't be able to get my parents to buy another, ever again.

School fundraiser prizes

During my early grade school years, each class of students would usually be asked once a year during the semester to go to the auditorium as a new fundraiser event was announced, in which different teams of classes would go out and sell chocolates around the neighborhood they live at. And, the prizes would be shown for the team that would get the most customers. The prizes could be anything big, a month's worth of candy, a bundle of hot toys that were on the market, or just something else that any kid would want. Unfortunately since I was in the "special needs" category of the school, I wasn't really qualified to attend any of them, so I really just felt like I was being spoiled of seeing other students potentially earning them.

Gex figures from ReSaurus Toys

Included inside of the instruction manual of the PC edition of Gex: Enter The Gecko was an advertisement showing a line of toys that would be coming soon from the toy company, ReSaurus. Not only that, but even in the Official U.S. Playstation Magazine they were giving news about Gex 3 themed figures coming as well, featuring highly detailed sculpts of Gex and a few other familiar characters. Well as far as the wait went, the last bits of news would be that the figures would have to be pushed back to a 2000 release date, but following that, ReSaurus themselves went bankrupt and any figures that were on display at toy shows were nowhere to be seen, possibly destroyed after the company went under. As someone who collects highly articulated figures today, this still upsets me.

The last school trade, ever

A fun aspect of going to school was showing classmates what we had from our home at the time, whether it was a kind of magazine, a happy meal toy, or maybe a music album. The third in particular was my first and last kind of novelty that I regretted to bring in one day around 1998, the "Bad Hair Day" CD from Weird Al Yankovic. One kid in the class asked if he could borrow it for a day saying he wanted to show his parents the particular album so he could have them buy it. Well, mysteriously the next day he acted as if he didn't have the album anymore, but I wasn't ready to give in to his game. I had the assistant principal contact the parents and they weren't aware what he did with it, but it seems that the phone call was enough to scare him, so he admitted that he broke the disc. With that said and done, the parents didn't buy a replacement, but instead had him bring in the money that was owed based on the price that I bought it for. I kept silent around him for the rest of the year after that.

I wanted Floam so badly my family found some at a discount store. My parents let me have it but I had to use it on a protected surface. My parents were not usually like that. Stuff made a big mess and I was so disappointed.

I hated selling a bunch of stuff and only getting an eraser or a bookmark or some cheap item. After a while I stopped selling stuff. I got sick trying to sell things nobody ?i knew wanted and getting bad prizes.

Somebody did that to me too, but with a 1994 Toys R Us wishbook catalogue thing. Some guy borrowed it then claimed his little sister "ripped it up". Then he brought it to school a few days later. When I asked he acted like he had no idea what he was talking about.

back in middle school I had a small collection of Pokémon figures from some cheap gacha machines around the town, one of the girls who used to play with us got mad at me for some reason and decided to flush my Pokes away, literally. The whole class got mad at her and I did too, but I was about to let it go when her mom got me a small set of Pokémon figures from a toy shop, those were a bit more expensive than the cheap gachas I had, so I felt kinda guilty accepting them :p
I did forgive her of course, we were kids, and kids do stupid things

I do agree that prizes for most contests including school fundraisers were usually letdowns. Same thing if you ever ordered anything from inside a comic book! Your childhood timeframe seems to be well after mine, so do not relate to the other 2 you mentioned. I do relate to Vaporman87's story about MOTU going away. I also would compare to favorite TV shows being cancelled and/or seeing a movie that you thought was going to awesome only to be sorely mistaken.

I'm so sorry you had those bad experiences before, my sweet love @Benjanime.
:'( Well, I have more bad experiences after the childhood than before it honestly, but of course I had some countless ones before as well, like being bullied, betrayal, false friends and other worse things.
You deserve a far better fate, my beloved @Benjanime. I do love you!❤❤

@Mr Magic

not at all.

@Vaporman

oh geez that sucks, that kinda reminds me of when the stone protectors toys got discontinued

Wasn't Floam a copycat of Squand?

I think there are levels of disappointment that could be discussed here, but I'm going to stick to the less personal ones... more focused on product and school life than life at home and relationships.

I was very disappointed when Masters of the Universe abruptly went belly up in '87. They had some pretty cool things planned that would have been awesome to see on shelves, even though I was growing out of collecting them around that time.

I was disappointed that a school levy that would have created a brand new high school that would have been ready by the time my age group arrived there did not pass.
