1340 | Article | Hoju Koolander | Very universal and true on the best list, though spider-rings never did it for me. On the worst list I would add money. Not because free money is bad, but the houses that did this usually gave out nickels. Maybe you could get a piece of Bazooka Joe gum at 7-11 for that price, but the disappointment of getting 5 cents that wasn't even enough for a vending machine was pretty major for a kid who watched Scrooge McDuck swimming in the stuff every afternoon. | Sep 27, 2014
1345 | Article | Hoju Koolander | @NLogan I thought I remembered that being part of the deal. Still, as incompetent as Beast-Man was, would he really be your first choice of evil minion? | Slime Time! | Sep 29, 2014
1352 | Article | Hoju Koolander | Pretty unique selections here. So are these box art examples from Greek releases? Is that why I've never seen this wrap-around style of VHS art before? I feel like trips to the video store would have been even cooler if the back of the box wasn't just text and 2-3 small photos, but part of a complete mural. | The Lost Art of VHS Boxes | Oct 01, 2014
1357 | Article | Hoju Koolander | @NLogan That is an awesome story. I assume the clerk was being a punk to your Dad? If not, I feel bad for the kid that was just reporting what the computer said. Either way he learned a lesson in "common sense" that day. | Timewarp: Blockbuster Video 1996 | Oct 02, 2014
1368 | Article | Hoju Koolander | Packed to the gills with Halloween goodness, the Creature would approve! Your love ofnthe holiday ismplain to see. Thanks for that odyssey of great costumes and memorabilia. I would have loved to have enjoyed classic Monster Movies in 3-D on TV, instead all we got were John Wayne films. But I was there at 7-11 to get my Hondo glasses nonetheless. Loved those spooky LPs. I had a Haunted Mansion record growing up that dramatized the ride, I can still hear the Raven's eery caw. Those orange monster books were a favorite for me as well, the one for Murders at the Rue Morgue was the only one I considered boring, so it only got one check out from the school library. Happiest of Halloweens to you and your family! | NLogan's Retro Halloween Overload | Oct 04, 2014
1369 | Article | Hoju Koolander | You are as always the king of mood setting layouts, the 8 bit monsters in the borders were great. Poor Steve, it was always special to me when the adults handing out candy were dressed up, it really amplified the spirit of the night. The soda displays were always epic, especially when Elvira and the Universal Monsters were involved thanks to Pepsi and Doritos. Good stuff! | Flannel Cornucopia | Oct 04, 2014
1384 | Article | Hoju Koolander | @NLogan Definitely had The Duke style glasses. I so wish I still had the Haunted Mansion record. I went through the record collection at the old homestead a few years ago, but it had disappeared. I was able to save the Pirates of the Carribean one though. Not quite as cool, but still memorable. | NLogan's Retro Halloween Overload | Oct 06, 2014
1402 | Article | Hoju Koolander | Ben do you know if that Garfield special was based on the anthology graphic novel Garfield, His 9 Lives? I used to love reading that book, especially the one about the Vikings. | Benjanime Scared Stupid III | Oct 08, 2014
1414 | Article | Hoju Koolander | I totally forgot that Elvira used to do a show at the Halloween Haunt! I remember going to Knott's one year while they were transforming it to Knott's Scary Farm and the workers setting-up the stage near the Mine Car ride said it was because Elvira was coming for the Haunt. Then you had to go and mention Kingdom of the Dinosaurs (sniff) that was the only reason I went to Knott's back in the day. I loved the animatronic scientist narrator, "YOU"RE GOING BACK IN TIME!" | Haunting Memories | Oct 09, 2014
1415 | Article | Hoju Koolander | Good stuff, Mike. It's crazy that the syndicated cartoons in the morning and afternoons co-existed for so long with the Saturday Morning cartoon block, but I suppose this was inevitable. That said, you hit on some of my favorites: Beetlejuice, Camp Candy and those Sunkist commercials are instant nostalgia for me. As for some of the others, I have a Hammerman VHS tape packed away somewhere (yes, it's terrible) and I bought the complete series of Hey Vern, It's Ernest for $5 at Wal-Mart a while back, I like to put it on while I'm cleaning the house on Saturday mornings. | R.I.P.
