Vice (2018)

I knew going in that this would be a pretty one-sided biopic. But the term “one-sided” really doesn’t do this movie justice. It’s really nothing less than full on Hollywood propaganda.

Was it good? Yeah. It was decent enough. Bale does an admirable job in the main role, and I enjoyed Steve Carrell as Don Rumsfeld. But man, I found myself laughing out loud at scenes that were clearly meant to stir completely different emotions. I imagine that a film like this is what snowflakes the world over dive headlong into when they feel depressed about the current administration.

Bumblebee (2018)

It was going to take a pretty special outing from the beings who are "more than meets the eye" to make me forget all the missteps made by several of the previous films.

I'm happy to report that this Bumblebee solo flick was just what the doctor ordered. Let me go through and check off everything right about it:

- Dripping with '80s nostalgia... check.
- Full of heart and humor... check.
- Autobots and Decepticons running around in their G1 visages... check.
- Serviceable human characters that you grow to care about... check.
- A well told story with great action that doesn't get sloppy... check.
- Also, did I mention it is dripping with '80s nostalgia? Man... what a soundtrack.

And now for a list of things happily missing:

- Shia Labeouf, Megan Fox, Marky Mark, and the rest... check.
- Michael Bay's influence (mostly)... check.
- Racist, stupid, or poorly fleshed out Transformers... check.
- Sloooooooooo Mooooooooooo Overload... check.

And finally, the one thing I could have done without:

- John Cena. Though, his part in this is more reminiscent of a Spielberg government type than a Bay one, which is good.

In summation, this is the best Transformers outing yet. And simply because somebody was able to pull that off, I'm rating this one pretty high.

Bicentennial Man

Remarkable film. Simply a winner. It's a long movie, but that's okay. IMO, sometimes the long ones are the best ones.

Life is beautiful and this film proves that! Robin Williams and Chris Columbus made a great team!

I agree Vapor, Bumblebee was great. The secret was that it wasn't so serious as the other films. We had a few minor villains, minimal collateral damage to cities and a sort of engaging storyline with the kids. For me, it proves just how much of an influence Guardians of the Galaxy had on the super hero genre as of late - with all the retro ambiance, humor and levity. Same goes for Spiderman Homecoming, it was light hearted and the fate of the world wasn't at stake.

so i watched into the spider-verse with the folks tonight. everything was fine with them until spider-ham and peni parker got introduced, then they just lost interest. i'm not familiar with those two either, but i still enjoyed the movie for what it was, had a kind of roger rabbit feel to it once they came into play. fun movie and was such a triumphant step up from sony animation's previous movie, the emoji movie. (cringe)

Agreed. It goes to show that it's not necessary for there to be over-the-top consequences for the on screen action. Keep it light and make sure there are some scenes that tug the heart as well as tickle the funny bone.

License to Drive

A 1988 comedy starring the late Corey Haim and Corey Feldman.

Why is this one so underrated? It's so funny! I love it!

Yes, that IS James Avery as the driving instructor.

Uhg. This film was kind of a sloppy mess. There were scenes that just made you scratch your head and think, "What the heck is going on?" The characters all say and do things that seem totally unrealistic given their situations. I just don't even know where to begin. You just have to watch it to understand. I was pretty disappointed in this.

Haven't watched this movie since I had it on VHS and honestly it looks great on modern tvs. Some truly breathtaking animation. The CGI villains, the Drej, look very 90's but everything else is fantastic!

Fun science-fiction adventure!
